Fiat Currency
Currency issued within a monetary system; account, payment and settlement currencies can differ.
Concept and usage
Currency issued within a monetary system; account, payment and settlement currencies can differ.[1][2]
In context
Fiat currency is money issued within a monetary system and used as a legal unit of payment, such as TWD, CNY or USD. A transaction can involve separate account, payment, conversion and settlement currencies.[1][2]
Common confusion
A currency symbol on a service does not necessarily show what a card is charged or what a bank ultimately receives. Conversion, issuer and service charges may be separate, so amounts at different stages should not be compared without their currency context.[1][2]
Example
When a service quotes USD but a card is charged in TWD, the billing rate and extra charges affect the result. Record the authorization currency, statement currency and credited amount to describe the full cost.[1][2]
