Volatility

Variation in the outcome distribution; provider labels may not share a common statistical scale.

Concept and usage

Variation in the outcome distribution; provider labels may not share a common statistical scale.[1]

In context

In game mathematics, volatility describes the spread and variation of outcomes, such as the relationship between frequent small outcomes and rarer large ones. Providers may use different scales, so high, medium and low labels are not automatically comparable.[1]

Common confusion

Volatility is not RTP and does not mean a game will eventually “make up” losses. Different distributions can share a theoretical average, while two games carrying the same label can still have different probability structures.[1]

Example

Two purely mathematical models can have the same average return but different spreads: one may cluster outcomes, while another has a wider distribution. The example distinguishes mean from distribution; it does not describe a real game’s parameters. Explain each distribution definition before comparing labels from different sources.[1]

These are related but not interchangeable. A large payout does not imply a likely outcome.Compare perspectivesUnderstanding RTP: expectation is not a promiseReturn to player describes long-run expected payouts relative to wagers under a specified game model. It is not a promised refund for a round or the amount an individual will receive over a short session.
